A classical villa for a couple who collect, made comfortable to live in.
A private villa in Katameya Dunes for a couple with an authentic, settled taste and a love of antiques. The classical envelope stays: travertine, carved cornices, arches. The furniture, light and movement through the house are modern, so the rooms hold their collection without becoming a museum.
A couple with settled, authentic taste and a love of antiques gathered over many years. They wanted a house that looked like them.
Rooms built around antiques can become museums: correct, admired, and uncomfortable to live in. This house had to be easy to live in every day.
Their taste leads. The classical shell stays, and the pieces they love are given room to be seen. Underneath, the seating, light and movement through the house are modern, deep and simple to use. The new sits quietly beneath the old rather than competing with it.
A classical shell furnished as though it were new
Cream travertine with dark stone banding, carved gypsum cornices and Corinthian capitals, walnut panelling and doors, book-matched grey marble, cut crystal, sapphire and taupe velvet, bronze. The arch is repeated at three sizes — the openings, the console, the backs of the sofas — so the classical envelope and the modern furniture read as one room rather than a period house someone has moved into.
